Abstract

This chapter explores common assessment tools for gauging sustainability progress in higher education, investigating their strengths and limitations. It highlights the importance of embedding assessment into sustainability practices and operations to enhance their quality and explores Florida Gulf Coast University’s experience assessing institutional-wide sustainability with a focus on Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)’s Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS). Lastly, we provide recommendations for FGCU for improving campus sustainability initiatives and suggest areas of future research for the improvement of sustainability assessment tools used among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
