Much has been written about the origin and evolution of the Everglades (for review, see Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-20070-1_1, this volume). The objective here is not to restate what has already been written but instead to highlight the environmental features and processes, both natural and those altered by humans that combine to make the Everglades extraordinarily susceptible to mercury.
