Abstract
University Colloquium: A Sustainable Future is an interdisciplinary sustainability course at Florida Gulf Coast University and a graduation requirement for all students. Developed to embody the University’s sustainability mission and in response to controversy surrounding campus site selection, the course provides students with an ecological perspective, sense of place, and broad understanding of sustainability. The rapid growth of the University during its 20-year history has created administrative, budgetary, and logistical challenges, as has maintaining a curriculum that accurately reflects the ever-changing field of sustainability. After an introduction to the purpose of this course, Part I of this chapter explores the evolving views of environmental education and education for sustainability. Part II presents the course’s history and the challenges faced during its evolution over time. Part III focuses on the assessment of the course and how it has helped drive revision through time. The chapter will conclude with a critique of the present state of the course and offer some potential directions for moving forward.
