Abstract

American Psychological Association Clients Clinical Practice Conversion Therapy Gender Identity Gender Nonconforming Human Psychology: Professional & Research Sexual Orientation Transgender Treatment Guidelines
This chapter describes how helping professions may use the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines for Psychological Practice With Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clients to develop practices that affirm transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) clients. It first reviews the four major theoretical frameworks that are embedded within the guidelines to describe the key importance of these theoretical frameworks in TGNC-affirming practice. Then, the chapter describes the 16 TGNC-affirming guidelines, with a special focus on how each of these guidelines counters gender identity change efforts (GICE). In doing so, it also reviews how the guidelines may be applied in everyday practice. The chapter describes other TGNC-affirming documents, such as the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care and the American Counseling Association Competencies for Counseling With Transgender Clients, that inform TGNC-affirming practice and challenge any GICE or sexual orientation change efforts.
