Abstract

Arts & Humanities Film, Radio & Television
Andrew deWaard’s recently published book, Derivative Media: How Wall Street Devours Culture (2024), re-examines and ultimately challenges conventional assumptions surrounding why sequels, reboots, adaptations, and franchises are so prevalent in twenty-first century popular culture. He argues that, contrary to widespread belief, popular media is derivative not because of marketing or audience preference, but due to Wall Street.
