Abstract
Excerpt: 'To Die in Cuba' “is a study of the Cuban way of death” (p. 5) by Louis A. Perez, Jr. Perez searches for an explanation for Cuba’s phenomenal incidence of suicide in the island’s 19th and 20th century history. Cuba has long led Latin America in suicide rates, and it consistently registers one of the highest rates of suicide in the world. The phenomenon predates the revolution and has not abated since 1959, making it a serious public health issue that also begs for a historical examination. There is no historian more qualified to research and write about Cuban history than Louis Perez, one of the most prolific historians of Latin America.
