Abstract

This multi-phase, interprofessional training model provides a scalable framework for improving healthcare education related to intellectual and developmental disabilities. Embedding this approach in professional curricula can contribute meaningfully toreducing healthcare disparities for this underserved population.

This presentation will describe the development of a three-phase training program for undergraduate and graduate students in health/related service programs in the unique needs of individuals with IDD. Presenters will discuss the interprofessional curricular design, and use of simulation technologies and immersive community-based experiences. The session will include presentation of information, demonstration of technology-based simulation (Dr. Hologram), and discussion of potential application in participants’ local area. This training program addresses the persistent need for specific training to improve the quality of care for individuals with IDD by health/related services professionals.
