Abstract

Parenthood has been the focus of considerable attention from scholars for some time. Yet, critical questions remain to be answered by scholars, such as, for example, how becoming a parent shapes evaluations of employees, how parenthood influences workplace and leadership outcomes, and how these effects may differ for mothers and fathers. In this symposium, we therefore showcase research that examines how parenthood – either as a potential, future or current state – bears consequences for both women and men in terms of their perceptions at work, workplace and leadership outcomes, and consequences for significant others. The symposium consists of five papers which complement each other given that they (i) focus on parenthood as a potential future state, pregnancy, and actual parenthood, (ii) examine different workplace outcomes (e.g., workplace discrimination, pregnant women’s career motivation and exhaustion), and (iii) employ different methodologies (experiments, multi-wave survey design, experience sampling method, qualitative semi-structure interviews).
