Abstract
This Research Work-in-Progress Paper presents a platform to understand and confront the problem of harassing behaviors that impedes the success of women and underrepresented minorities in engineering. Building on the findings from the 2018 NASEM report, this mixed methods study is rooted in the theories of tokenism, gender stereotyping, and intersectionality. This paper presents the conceptual framework for this study including a three-stage mixed method design and presents initial results from phase 1 regarding prevalence estimates of harassing behaviors using the UC Civility Audit 2020. An understanding of the problem of harassing behaviors and of prevalence estimates is critical to selecting, designing, implementing, and studying interventions to tackle this threat for achieving a diverse workforce.
