Abstract
This dataset contains the de-identified survey data and Stata replication code
underlying the study "Environmental Knowledge and Meat Consumption: Evidence from
South Africa and Norway." The study examines whether environmental knowledge about
the climate impacts of meat production is associated with self-reported meat
consumption frequency in two contrasting food systems.
Data comprise two consumer surveys: South Africa (n=561), collected May-June 2015
through face-to-face tablet-administered interviews across seven geographical
regions of Johannesburg, Gauteng; and Norway (n=561), collected in 2016 through an
online survey panel administered by a professional market research company.
Variables include meat consumption frequency, environmental and climate knowledge
items, and demographic and socioeconomic characteristics (sex, age, education,
income, household size, urban/rural residence).
Analyses use negative binomial regression with Poisson, linear, ordered logit, and
binary logit specifications as robustness checks, together with alternative
environmental knowledge measures and subsample analyses. All reported tables and
robustness checks can be reproduced from the included annotated do-files.
The deposit includes: (1) de-identified South Africa dataset; (2) de-identified
Norway dataset; (3) variable codebook; (4) annotated Stata do-files; (5) README
with file descriptions and instructions. No personally identifiable information is
included.
Data were collected under the South African-Norwegian Research Cooperation
Programme (SANCOOP), jointly funded by the South African Department of Science and
Innovation and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and implemented by the
National Research Foundation (South Africa) and the Research Council of Norway.
Ethical approval was obtained in accordance with South African and Norwegian
research ethics guidelines, and all participants provided informed consent.
