Abstract

Excerpt: This special issue of Ecological Engineering on research at the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park (ORWRP) is loosely based on two events that occurred in October 2012. The first was a changing of the guard at the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park as two of the three editors of this special issue headed south to run a wetland center in the Florida Everglades. The second event was EcoSummit 2012, an international ecology conference held in Columbus, Ohio, USA, on October 1–5, 2012 (Mitsch, 2013). The EcoSummit 2012 scientific committee of 29 scientists and engineers from around the world did a splendid job of organizing what may be remembered as one of the most influential international ecology congresses of this decade. The Columbus Declaration (EcoSummit 2012 Scientific Committee, 2013; See Supplement A entitled “Harmonization of societal needs with the ecosphere in the Anthropocene Era” and developed by the scientific committee was especially poignant and timely. This special issue is one of several from EcoSummit 2012, some of which are still being completed at press time.
