Abstract
Excerpt: Fish often aggregate under floating objects in both the nearshore and open ocean environment (Gooding & Magnuson 1967, Hampton & Bailey 1992, Hunter & Mitchell 1966). Of these objects, naturally occurring ones, particularly logs, are fished more frequently than either floating refuse or anchored fish aggregation devices (FADs) (Hampton & Bailey 1992). Tuna purse seiners in the eastern tropical Pacific frequently make repeated sets on logs, some of which are identified by the skippers as mangroves (Martin Hall, Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, pers. comm.), although some observers do not believe that mangroves float because of their high wood density (Caddy & Majkowski 1992).
