Abstract
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States (2015) with 1 of 3 adults suffering from high blood pressure (2016). This is particularly true in the African American community where in 2010 "African Americans were 30 percent more likely to die from heart disease than non-Hispanic whites” and "African American women are 60% more likely than non-Hispanic white women to have high blood pressure”. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health). The CDC Health Disparities & Inequalities Report-United States (CHDIR) of 2011 stated that health disparities in the United States are unacceptable and correctable.
