Abstract
An accurate and reliable assessment of bridge conditions can help public and private entities better plan for bridge maintenance, repair, and reconstruction. Because the performance of bridges over their useful lives depends on multiple aspects, it is essential to investigate the factors affecting their conditions. Literature has shown that aging, climatic conditions, increased traffic demand, and delayed maintenance lead to deterioration that eventually affects the usability of the bridge. Among those factors, climatic conditions such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall negatively affect the durability and service life of the bridge. The objective of this paper is to explore the influence of climatic conditions on the performance ratings of the bridge deck, substructure and superstructures. National Bridge Inventory (NBI) data from states of Illinois and Florida in 2022, representing two different climate zones in the United States, will be used to analyze the effects of climate conditions. This study will show the quantitative impact of climate on the bridge conditions and contribute to our understanding of the relationship between environmental factors and bridge deterioration.
