Abstract

Excerpt: One of the best things about editing this journal is getting articles from international authors. The chances of me actually ever visiting Ghana, Estonia, Nigeria, or Pakistan are pretty slim, but I feel like I've been to all of these places—well, at least to libraries in all of them. We have common values and issues, though we certainly have widely varying levels of infrastructure and budgetary support. Librarians everywhere have realized the efficacy of banding together into consortia to save money and maximize the use of our collections. Most librarians embrace the Internet as a force for good that can help solve such fundamental problems as poverty and health by raising the educational level of our societies through resource sharing and open access publishing. Yes, really; I don't think that's too broad a statement of our ideals.
