Abstract
Excerpt: Studying the health of populations, irrespective of national boundaries, presents a challenge for nurse educators preparing globally conscious nursing students. Providing global health experiences in prelicensure nursing education is most commonly associated with study abroad or international service trips and has been shown to increase the level of cultural competency among nursing students.1 Although international travel presents opportunities for students to explore other cultures and regions of the world, it is not an affordable or realistic option for many students. In a world that is becoming more global each day, nurse educators need to find creative and affordable methods to immerse nursing students in global learning as part of their educational experience. Incorporating new technologies, such as Google Earth, provides educators with an innovative method to give nursing students a richer hands-on experience and a better point of reference when discussing global health issues. The purpose of this article is to describe the use of Google Earth as an interactive teaching tool to create global engagement experiences for nursing students.
