Constellations (Oxford, England), Vol.23(4), pp.523-535

Abstract

An essay is presented on the happiness machine and the ideological mechanism that promotes the status quo and stifles dissent in German philosopher Theodor Adorno's critical theory. Topics discussed include the improbability of living the wrong life rightly, the need for philosophy to focus on contingent content, and the self-contradiction in the social reality that is capitalism. Also noted are the disastrous consequences of identifying inner health with happiness in one's social situation.
