Abstract
Kratom, an herbal plant, has gained increasing attention due to the opioid crisis. Mitragynine, (pronounced MY-truh-guy-neen), the active compound in kratom, interacts with opioid receptors. This over-the-counter product has been used for relief of pain, mood enhancement, and as an opioid alternative. Despite the increasing use, kratom remains largely unregulated, and the safety profile is limited. The purpose of this narrative review is to synthesize the available literature and provide implications for nurse practitioner practice.
•Kratom has pharmacological stimulant and analgesic effects.•Studies warn of its adverse effects and addictive potential.•Regulatory status varies by state.•Nurse practitioners must be able to identify and treat adverse effects of kratom.•Nurse practitioners should remain informed about the latest Drug Enforcement Agency and Food and Drug Administration communications.
