Abstract
The field of leadership has evolved significantly over the years. While different theoretical perspectives have come and gone, common themes and principles have emerged that remain important for effective leadership. An additional topic that has received considerable attention in a wide array of leadership and management discussions is motivation, primarily because leadership and motivation are necessarily connected. Management can learn to influence motivation by recognizing two important principles. The first principle has to do with whether or not motivation is a personal trait. The second principle is related to the link between motivation and individual performance. In addition to the principles outlined above, two important motivation theories, Goal Setting Theory and Expectancy Theory, offer guidelines that can assist managers and supervisors in creating motivating environments for their employees. In summary, leaders should strive to gain a deeper understanding of motivation as they work to develop key relationships with employees.
