Abstract

In order to act decisively an executive must often exceed his or her base of authority. Taking the initiative is cru cial to strong leadership. It also means the executive is always vulner able to criticism when actions tran scend that authority. Niccolo Machi avelli is credited for these unusual insights into the modern concept of the executive.
