Abstract

This thesis examines how there have been multiple instances of willful ignorance of the atrocities committed against the Assyrians and other Christian minorities residing in the Middle East. It explores the consistent failures international organizations have committed when Assyrians and other Christian minorities have reached out when facing persecution and little to no accountability has been issued. This study is dependent on international legal doctrine including the Rome Statute, conventions held by the United Nations, and United Nations General Assemblies. Though there seem to be multiple routes to ensure justice prevails in situations of persecution and clear violations of humanitarian law, jurisdictional issues that lie within international law along with geopolitical interests have affected the ability of the International Criminal Court to intervene. This study analyzes the weaknesses and loopholes within international law in along with other atrocities committed against other groups of people to determine how to issue proper accountability in the case that atrocities of these natures are committed again. Utilizing international legal doctrine and multiple cases of severe violations of humanitarian law allow for this research to properly compare the similarities between the events that had occurred and how they should be properly categorized and addressed. This study aims to provide awareness to international organizations in the case that events of this nature occur again and shows how to ensure that accountability is maintained and that there are measures that can be used to reform current policy to ensure justice is received.
