Abstract

Cultural competence Cultural humility Global aging Long-term care Quality of life
As society rapidly ages and becomes more diverse, particular focus must be placed on varied cultural perspectives that contribute to promoting residents’ quality of life in long-term care. Threats to long-term care residents’ well-being vary greatly, but often include divergent socioeconomic background and access, low health literacy, limited family and social support, staffing shortages, and regulatory burden, in addition to insufficient attention to individual health preferences and cultural needs. Improvement in these domains can be accomplished across societies with individualistic or collectivistic long-term care approaches. To allow older adults across the world to experience successful aging, medical ageism must be reduced, and cultural competence and humility should be adopted in combination with evidence-informed resources for meaningful cultural assessment and intervention in long-term care.
