Abstract
It is hard to envision living without a computer or television and other electronic devices that have become so ordinary since the arrival of modem technology. Video games, computers and television are replacing outside activities like sports that once provided sufficient exercise to children and adolescents. IOC President Jacques Rogue has identified the decline in physical activity as a emergent problem for the youth of the world and identifies growing technology as a probable explanation. "Today we observe a widespread decline in physical activity and an increase in obesity among youth", Rogge said, citing fewer physical activities in schools and the disappearance of open spaces in cities. He also blamed the rise of the computer culture. "One can speak of screen addiction," Rogge said. "Multimedia, with its elaborate graphics... is sometimes more appealing than sport." The digital age has had a cost;, childhood obesity is on the rise. Technology is having a profound impact on leisure activities among adolescents. This manuscript will address several different issues surrounding the obesity epidemic and how adequately the Jacques Rogge's YOG initiative will address this issue.
