Abstract
[Excerpt] On April 20, 2013, Tough Mudder held an obstacle-course race in Gerrardstown, Virginia. A Tough Mudder is a 10–12-mile-long endurance race with obstacles challenging upper- and lower-body strength throughout the course. Tough Mudder is managed by Tough Mudder Corporation. During the event, participant Avishek Sengupta was completing one of the obstacles: a climb up to an elevated platform and a jump into a pit of water. As Avishek jumped into the water and submerged, a different participant jumped into the water where Avishek was. Avishek did not surface. Lifeguards and SCUBA rescue personnel employed by Amphibious Medics Inc. pulled the unconscious Avishek from the water, and he was transported to a medical facility. He died the next day when taken off life support.
