Abstract
Valuation of real assets is a fundamental function of real estate professionals. As a result, real estate appraisal is, or should be, a common element in most undergraduate real estate programs. Appraisal courses, however, are taught by faculty who, as a result of variations in education and professional experience, deliver courses that differ in many substantive aspects. An analysis of syllabi collected from a national survey of real estate programs is used to determine where appraisal is being taught and what is being taught. The goal is the construction of benchmarks for appraisal education at the university level while providing a snapshot of course offerings and the place of appraisal within university curriculums.
